I have been stopped dead in my tracks with a back injury. Yesterday I was at work, doing my usual stuff. When I tried to get up from my chair to retrieve something off the printer, I couldn't move. The pain in my lower back was so bad I almost fell over. It then translated itself into a sciatica attack and then I was knotting up like a pretzel. I popped 4 Advil and prayed that I would make it home. Well, duh, I had to make a pit stop at the grocery store for a few things and promptly threw up in the parking lot when my back twitched in rebellion. I went straight to my chiropractor (who was down the street) and they were awesome enough to see me on the spot. The other alternative was the emergency room, but I said eff that.
So after 30 mins of e-stim and cold therapy, I made it off the table and home to my bed. Doc ordered me off my feet for 24 hours and to rest the legs, with ice as often as possible on my lower spine. So now today I am on the sofa with knitting, a book, my laptop and lots of ice packs. And 2 yowly cats looking for attention.

So I haven't been a good blogger in a long time. I apologize to my 7 regular readers - I do love and appreciate you so I am posting something of substance tonight. I actually don't have much to say outside of my incredibly boring life because all I do I work and go to class. The spring semester is almost over, heading into finals next week, then I start all over again. Well... I hope I start all over again, for summer term. I had to be waitlisted for the 3 classes I selected because A) I'm pokey. and B) I still have a balance on my spring term bill, so I can't officially register until payday and if there is space for my summer selections. So we wait until next week. If not, then it will have to wait until the fall semester, which would annoy me to no end, but that's a post for another day.

Oh wait... we DID get a new addition to the family. We adopted a kitten about a month ago, at 9 1/2 weeks... A baby girl who is a sneaky little sh-t ....just imagine how much badness can be packed into 1.5 lbs of black and white, and you have our new daughter... see photo above and guess from the kitten pile which one is ours?

Her name is Kunoichi AC and she is one of the offspring of my friend Jón's cat Saga. Saga is a beautiful calico from Alabama who is tiny and slinky

and has the prettiest eyes ever. (two points if you can guess what the AC stands for *grins*)

Sooooo... it was a no-brainer that we adopted one of her little ones.

Kuno looks just like Saga but with two colors instead of three.

She is also part billy-goat and a garbage can because she eats anything.

Also, "kunoichi" is Japanese for "female ninja"...very appropriate because she's slithery and sneaky. LOL

Angel is still deciding whether to mentor her or eat her.

I planted a window sill garden of bamboo, wheat grass, black-eyed Susans, pink begonias,

and a Christmas cactus piece I rescued in 2004...that sucker is still alive and blooming. XD

Crocheted (with the help of 2 friends) 50 hacky sacks for charity,

and had my car stolen (then recovered in the same day).

Will be doing the NASCAR thing in Dover this weekend,

after missing both NASCAR in Richmond and Maryland Sheep & Wool a few weeks ago due to sh-t out of my control.

Let's see... anything else going on?

Nope. I sometimes wish for a life less ordinary, but for now, it is what it is :)

I leave you with a deep parting thought for this evening:

When it seems like more and more people in your life (close or casual acquaintance) are disappointing you,

do you feel it is because they actually are? Or...

is it a case of needing to lower your expectations and standards?

Just wondering.

I received yummy summer goodness in the mail today!

A "care package" of delicious POMWonderful pomegranate juice, courtesy of the POMBlogger.
These are teeny little 8 oz. bottles of juice that came packed with 2x3 ice packs and a cool fun facts information packet about pomegranates.
I was so happy to see these little bottles after a horrible past-2-days...and even John decided that these tasty little drink treats looked good enough to try (and like) for the first time. Yay!!!

Andreea and her friends work very hard to help & save those strays & ferals who have been abandoned and left to die. This is definitely a worldwide issue but especially those who are pet owners know how much joy a dog or cat brings to our daily lives, and speaking for myself, I try and help out as many people who are trying to help out the strays as much as possible.

On a domestic note, another friend of mine, Sue, is pushing the stray cat & dog rescue effort here at home

This past weekend was Maryland Sheep & Wool 2009 and even though I didn't get to go to both days, I spent an amazing Saturday night with online friends that I have know for years through the Knitty Coffeeshop and Ravelry. This piccie is one taken by Cristi (thank you!) while we were all at Pam's house - I was getting an awesome hug from my little NJ sister Jesh. I've known her since 2006 but we've never met in person til this moment. Also met my Amazing Asian Trifecta sistas Karen aka cooknknit and Tania aka mikomiao - as well as the uber fabulous Rosi G. and equally fab Denise aka BoricuaKnitter424 Alice aka yarnkarma with sweet hubby Jeff and Valerie & her sweet hubby Dustin. Two words sum up the weekend: GOOD TIMES!

Last month, a young girl working at Old Navy ringing my purchase had been wearing a powder blue crocheted sling bag for a square box of tissues...it was so cute & we chatted for several minutes about how she made it, what kind of yarn, etc. She had a terrible cold & apologized for having to blow her nose while ringing me up. I told her it was no problem whatsoever & that I understood. I was just fascinated by the bag - it was TOO CUTE.
Well, ever since then I had been mulling it over how to make one of my own...and I came up with this when I got home from work last night. I have a nasty cold/flu thing going that started yesterday & I had been keeping my pockets & sleeves stuffed with tissues & napkins to keep them handy. Til now. :^)
This took me 2 hours to make (after frogging 3 times about 2 inches in) but it's the fastest I've ever cranked out an item. Go me!

Farewell Stitches East:Baltimore

Stitches held its last gathering in Baltimore this year - next year XRX KnittingUniverse moves it to Hartford, CT.
So I decided to make a solo trip yesterday and take a peek. No classes, all the remotely cool ones were filled up over a month ago, so I took in the Market. It was noticeably smaller this year vs. last and the year b4 so I am not surprised it's shifting venues. I made a small bundle of purchases: 2 baby hanks of Cherry Tree Hill Louet Gems in Cherry Blossom, a skein of Noro Kureyon Sock, a ball of crazy Jelly Yarn, 2 balls of Habu pima and a mad crazy deal on Lexie Barnes needle cases - 1 for crochet, 1 for circs.

This was just past the entrance queue - they were cracking down on people taking pictures so I had to ninja this one LOL

I bumped into Jody aka Javajem while waiting in line for overpriced, lousy food so we sat down in the concession area with her friend Coleen to rest for a few minutes. It was a nice break to snack & knit with wonderful people, people watching and chatting. During this break, the lady in charge of Stitches Media Relations walked by and asked if she could film us knitting for the KU/XRX website. Of course we hammed it up for the camera - hopefully it will be edited into something fun for everyone to see.

Jody & Coleen are really fun & awesome by the way - I'm glad we sat for a while. The funny thing about my bumping into Jody is that we seem to be connected by cosmic forces - remember Duran Duran back in May? Jody & her entourage were sitting in the same row as me and we didn't even know it!

Very tired so I will pause for now. I have some other piccies and stuff to blog but I need to get cracking on my weekend homework so I will be back later.

I haven't been knitting much because I pulled 3 straight all-nighters to get a 16-page math assignment, a take home test and 4 online assignments completed... last night went to a night wedding that had a full Catholic mass, and in between... job hunting for the better paycheck.

Today I am bleary eyed and suffering from a nasty acne breakout on my chin. It's probably the recent stress plus lack of sleep so forgive me if my blogging is boring as of late.

My Sunday sports routine has been disrupted due to the World Series as well... I mean no big deal, WS is still sports, but I'm used to football/NASCAR/football *chuckle*

I can't believe that November is right around the corner. 2008 is just screaming past...

My ex-boyfriend tracked my down online. He's a nice guy so I'm not worried - always had a good heart & I only wish the best for him & his family. It's nice that we can have civil messaging and pleasantries, even after the past awkwardness.

I have started to revamp my thinking to "I have only one younger sister" and my mother knows why. (My current WIP is for her because she is actually a very cool person... just needs to outgrow the goth stage LOL)

I would love to have a jar of kimchi without a bug in the bottom 1/3 (yes I had eaten most of the jar before that discovery...) - ewwwww.

I would like to have a good night's sleep.

I would like to have my hair look just like the way I had it cut and styled 4 days ago as opposed to a Chia pet. Oh by the way, no more pink. *sniffle* (I figured I should probably have serious hair for a little while, then eventually sneak back into harajuku mode.)

Spent an awesome fall afternoon at the Navy Homecoming game against Pitt yesterday, sans knitting because the gate ushers are peckerheads and thought my knitting needles were "unsafe" *insert eye roll here*

It had been 60-something only hours before this shot was taken, then *shoomp!* - the temperature drops like a cinder block as soon as 5pm rolls around. My husband suggested before I left to take an extra long sleeved shirt and a fleece with me, but it was pretty warm so I left them in the car...

A Request for Some Friends

So, you guys have heard me mention our friends Steve and Mindy, right? Well, I may not have mentioned it, but one of their two fabulous kids happens to have special needs. So, Steve posted the other day about the Special Olympics World Winter Games Scarf Project. They are working with Coats and Clark to try to collect enough scarves in the official Special Olympics colors so that every athlete will have one. The only rule is that the scarves (either knit or crochet - your call) need to be done in Red Heart Super Saver in delft blue (885) and white (311). They have provided free knit and crochet versions, but you can make them in any pattern you would like.

The scarves need to be sent to the Special Olympics by January 15th, 2009 - the address and other information are at the link above.

So, I know I’ll be picking up some yarn to make some scarves. Who’s with me?

A very non-makeup kind of day, so my apologies for looking a little rough. School's back in session so I'm back to my 3-5 hour study/homework blargs. Anyhoo, I am holding 2 very roxy-like skeins of Silky Merino Malabrigo and a super-cute Hello Kitty Pez, courtesy of Emma, Pam, Stephie, Sharon, Shannon and the rest of the SeaSockysocks 08 krew who took the time out of their busy Alaskan itinerary to find signature pink, Roxy-ish things for me :) I was so excited when Pam handed them to me when I visited on Friday... thank you very much girls! It makes me feel loved to have such cool, thoughtful chicas in my court.
I met Pam's awesome parents on Friday too, when we gathered to watch Wheel of Fortune & Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? - Carrie & Amanda were there, along with Alex, Kris and all the Chez Trillian aminals ;). It was very nice and I felt almost normal.

This is fairly straightforward, almost boring because there are no earth-shattering answers but it still made me smile because he knows me fairly well when it comes to the fiber stuff LOL.

The fact that it tends to slow-creep out and take up spaces.

Compared to what? Crack? No, not really, it CAN be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be…

Not really, nothing I can think of off the top of my head.

is a good day to be an American & a Marylander.

It's also my birthday.
I'm 37 and amazed at how fast time flies.
It's been a crazy year, yet there is still much to be done, unpredictable yet comfortable, satisfying yet frustrating.
As for today, nothing special going on - too broke really, since we had to take birthday money we had saved/set aside to pay for repairs to my car, so instead I made 5 lbs. of my famous queso and gave Angel a bath. (Still bleeding as of this moment, too)
Watched the NASCAR race, painted my toes, colored my stripe and some grays, played with some yarn. A very quiet, uneventful day.
Also, knitting and sewing, trying to make a few more items for the Etsy shop, working on my Airy Scarf for the final week or so of Ravelympic competition. My original goal of using the whole ball for my project will not happen - I'm certain of it - but I know I'm going to get a nice, satisfying piece when I am done.
To add flair to my birthday celebration, I have been sick for the last 2 days (complete with a lovely massive cold sore- ew) & John has been fighting a bad flu/ear infection thingy, so we definitely make a fun pair. (Especially since neither one of us was able to actually stay home, with so much to do @ each respctive job. *sigh*)
BUT - I am psyched that Michael Phelps achieved his unbelieveable feat on my effing birthday so it will have extra meaning hee hee.

I just got an IM from a friend asking for the queso recipe again (I had posted it on Plurk a few days ago with a big response) so I will put it here as well.

Roxy's Mad Crazy Tasty Queso
(this is a 5 lb. batch recipe, but you can adjust the quantities to match your needs/taste)

Two 2lb blocks of Velveeta or similar cheese product
3 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1 cup sliced jalapenos (the kind that come in a can or jar) chopped finely
1 baseball-sized tomato diced
1/2 red onion chopped
1 tblsp chopped garlic, fresh or jar
1 bunch cilantro, rinsed and chopped
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup jalapeno juice
1/2 cup water

Cut cheese into cubes and place in top portion of a double boiler. Layer jalapenos, tomatoes, garlic, cilantro, onions then top with Monterey Jack cheese. Pour water, lemon & jalapeno juice over top. Bring water in bottom portion to a boil, adding as needed to keep the level up on the sides of the upper pan. Loosely cover with a lid and simmer until all cheese is melted, about 30 minutes, stirring to break up lumps and blend vegetables. Serve with white or blue corn tortilla chips and enjoy!

You can add or subtract vegetable amounts to taste - I like lots of onions & peppers. This recipe is party-sized, so it feeds a lot of people at once or two or three people for a few days LOL
Calorie count is about 5800 for the whole pan, so you can divvy it up into smaller amounts to avoid the temptation of eating it all in one sitting hahaha

Between cleaning the craft room, laundry, and studying my psychology text - I got started on my Ravelympics project today--- casted on about 6:45am (yeah I know we were supposed to wait til 8am, but I have a good reason LOL) this morning and went on my merry way!

...but I am such a sheep. I am starting the Ravelympics 2008 tomorrow with about a gajillion other knitters/crocheters/spinners/weavers on Ravelry. Since my regular readers know that I can barely maintain one or two dedicated WIPs at one time, I chose an easy project because I know that I am the Slowsky Diva of knitting. (For the record I am back up to 18 WIPs - bad case of startitis but you can bet your ass I'm frogging most of them)

You've seen this one before - it's the Four Hour Airy Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts but I plan to use a whole ball of ~~Madil Kid Seta~~ :D Rowan Kidsilk Haze...

I'll be lucky to finish the actual pattern let along my plans for extending the rows until the whole ball is used up!
It's strange - between this and Mystery Stole 4 I am actually participating in organized knitting again. Who am I and what have I done with the real roxy? LOL

How would you categorize this?
I went to NJ last week to retrieve my father's belongings from a friend's house before they move out of state. In my 418 miles of travel over 1 1/2 days I stopped to see several old friends for a fly-by smooch and it made my heart ache. I mean, in a good way but also pushed my deep depression buttons. I think it's because it reminded me of how much I am missing out on in my life due to work, now school and all the drudgery over the last 3 years.

1) A friend got his masters in Business Admin while another friend moved into a bigger home and expanded his client base for his business.
2) Both had beautiful children in the last 2 years and
3) I listened to tales of fabulous vacations and toured these new homes with abundant gardens and pretty furnishings. Sat with stay-at-home-moms who had big, beautiful craft rooms, book clubs, fresh ground coffee and regular, established dinner plans that didn't include me. (they said they would if I still lived closer LOL but I don't so c'est la vie)
I know, I know... I know I sound jealous - I admit I am a teeny bit - but I don't begrudge my friends the rewards of hard work and fruits of labor. Not one bit. I am very proud of them and it warms my heart to see them so happy.
It's more that I am very tired and every now and then need to take a deep breath and refocus when I see what I have ahead of me when it comes to my education, future plans. They say the best revenge is living well, and I plan to do that someday as Dr. Roxy - but also sharing with my friends & family so they know how much I love & appreciate them.

After leaving NJ, I met up with Sharon and Jas in Philly to see Jas off on her Great California Adventure, and we ate garlic pizza as we marveled at how much stuff could actually fit into a small UHaul trailer.

Driving home down 95, I felt very small and alone (even though I love road trips) and attempted to call people since I had 2 1/2 hours to kill (but no one was answering their phones) until I met up with my husband for dinner, and delivered three loads of acrylic yarn from Jas to Pam's back porch for the Hats for Alex project and 3 bags of dried floral craft supplies (also from Jas) to Ruth at 10:45pm. She fed me a granola bar and a Cherry Coke Zero and gave me a kiss, sending me home to bed with a promise to call me later this week. I fell into bed snoring & drooling with Angel meowing at the foot of the bed because I had been gone for almost 2 days. Jas had slipped me a skein of her custom-dyed Hello Kitty yarn as a gift (I squee'd when I found it again the next morning) - I've been petting it for days now, trying to decide what I want to do with it. (It's not really called Hello Kitty - we just dubbed it that because it's pink & lavender LOL)

So that has been my week in a nutshell, minus the other minor blog posts. I'm excited because I may get to meet up with Sharon again in Baltimore next week when they release her new taxi. *fingers crossed*

I am stash busting a Log Cabin blanket. With acrylic. I have something like 17 WIPs in various Monkey Bags, GoKnit pouches and random drawstring bags and yet - totally KADD and unable to complete any one project. The closest was in 2 months I have produced 1/2 Executive Funk and a crocheted bath bomb holder that started out as Cristi's market bag LOL! (and y'all know I have the best success with squares & rectangles anyhoo)
So here's my redeeming project with an homage to... Red Heart! Woo!

Roxy went to the movies again?

I have been listening to the soundtrack to Mamma Mia nonstop since last night - the movie was so fun that I'm going to go see it again and drag John with me. I love ABBA music! I'm not ashamed to admit it hahahaha I can however say that Pierce Brosnan, regardless of how damn sexy he is as James Bond, cannot - I repeat cannot sing for crap!

I'm not saying I can sing anymore, but I think I can carry "S.O.S." and "Waterloo" better than he can. And of course, "Dancing Queen"

LMAO

But the kicker is the fact that since May I've seen Iron Man, Wanted, Indiana Jones and now Mamma Mia. That's 4 movies (with Iron Man twice heh heh heh) in 2 1/2 months. I didn't see 4 movies in-theater in 2 1/2 years before then.

*scratches head*

We are going to see The Dark Knight tomorrow and X-Files on Monday if things work out.

(I think part of all this movie nonsense is the comfort knowing that I am not paying full price for sh*tty films with the student ID LOL)

I have not been doing much except summer classes, and working. A little knitting here and there in my spare time, and I'm trying out a roxy version of Cristi's Beginner Crochet Market Bag - PDF in my spare-spare time. Also, thanks to the turtley one I have found Plurk.

Another great way to waste time hahahaha. Between Flickr, Facebook, Ravelry & Knitty I'm done. No time for school, work, knitting, hubby, eating or sleeping!
Soooo kidding. As he puts it... I have forgotten how to have fun.

Which is why I am going to a barbecue on Saturday with him, and two of my friends. We're hopping in the Japanese Banana and rolling wayyyyyyyy up Rt. 95 to meet up with some of the crew from NH, PA, NJ and northeast MD.
We went to see Indiana Jones a few weeks ago, and saw Wanted on Sunday. Before that I saw Iron Man twice, back in May.

I have to tell you, for those of you who don't know my movie going habits... well, they are non-existent. I never go to the movies because a) most of them suck and b) I'd rather spend my 10 bucks on yarn, Lush or food.
The mere fact that I get a student discount now with my college ID may have altered that a wee bit -- I only have to pay $8.50 for a sh*tty movie now, instead of $10!
So between the uber-violent and uber-bizarre scenes in Wanted (which I enjoyed thoroughly) I worked on a cashmere 2x2 ribbed skinny scarf.
I enjoyed that little bit of old-me activity, I should tell you. But that's for another day. Or another blog...or not. I'm not sure... help me remember my pledge of keeping Meowycakes drama-free, okay? :)
